What is Glass?.
Since ancient times, glass has not ceased to
astonish mankind. Glass ductility provides a seemingly endless
array of possibilities, either for domestic as well as for
industrial use, in the optics field and even in the art field.
For example, limestone glass is present daily in tableware,
goblets, ashtrays and decorative objects; flat and transparent
glass protects the homes from weather conditions when used
as windowpanes.
Glass is so common to contemporary society that it would be
difficult to conceive modern living without it. Its presence
is fundamental for lamps to irradiate light; it is equally
necessary for the manufacturing of televisions, computers
and transportation vehicles; while, in the scientific field
and that of precision instruments, it is worth mentioning
glass used in lenses, microscopes and telescopes. Finally,
in art domains glass has shown a newfangled facet during the
last third of the XX century, for its use as prime element
of expression by several well-known visual art creators.
